Study Shows Self Breast Exams May Not Be Very Helpful

A new study has shown that self breast exams may do very little to cut down on the risks associated with cancer.Washington (ChattahBox) – A new study has shown that self breast exams may do very little to cut down on the risks associated with cancer.

In the past, the long-time belief was that you should check your own breasts for lumps once each month.

This may not be the case though as researchers from the Cochrane Collaboration looked over two major studies which included nearly 400,000 women.

They found that twice as many biopsies of benign breast lumps were performed in women who did self-exams. These can be dangerous and lead to health problems of their own.

The Departent of Health, and other groups have followed these new guidelines, as they are no longer telling people to check themselves for lumps.

Their research further found that the difference in breast cancer deaths between groups who performed self exams, and those who did not were virtually zero.

People are being told to be aware, but not to be as pro-active in performing their own exams, as it should be best left up to a doctor.

The review appears in the journal The Cochrane Library.
