Following NIAID Decision, Search For HIV Vaccine Continues
July 22, 2008
Washington (ChattahBox) - Following a recent decision by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to delay the trial of a new HIV vaccine, those hoping for a medical breakthrough will have to wait.
The search continues for an HIV vaccine as the human trial, called PAVE 100, was delayed.
The trial was going to be done on a new vaccine, testing it on humans to see how effective it was.
Originally, the trial was supposed to start in October 2007, but was delayed after a decision by Merck & Co. came to pull the plug on their HIV vaccine.
The PAVE 100 trial was initially set up to have 8,500 volunteers from the U.S., South America, Caribbean, Eastern, and Southern Africa, but was scaled down over time.
The NIAID eventually came to the decision to delay the trial after they consulted with those in the scientific and HIV advocacy communities.
