July 23, 2008
Boston (ChattahBox) - Researchers have come out and stated that a new minimally invasive procedure could cure a very common cause of infertility in men known as varicoceles.
Varicoceles, or swollen veins in the scrotum, is common, but could be treated with a procedure called retrograde venous embolization.
A study on the procedure was led by Dr. Sebastian Flacke of the University of Bonn Medical Center in Germany.
The study included a total of 223 infertile men with 228 varicoceles went through the procedure.
After the study 226 were successfully treated, with a 92.4% success rate in terms of improving patients’ fertility.
The procedure is carried out by a very small catheter and managed to block any excessive blood flow into the veins, which allow them to shrink back down and appear normal once again.
The procedure helps improve sperm quality, and increase the chance of pregnancy.
The study will be published in the journal Radiology.
