Illegal Painkiller Fentanyl Kills Over 1,000 Due To Overdoses
July 25, 2008
Boston (ChattahBox) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has revealed that overdoses of the illegal painkiller fentanyl resulted in 1,000 people in the U.S. dying.
The deaths took place across 6 states, from 2005 to 2007, according to research from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
The CDC deemed this as the biggest epidemic of overdoses of an illegal painkiller in history, and the fear is that it is going to grow further, as fentanyl is getting cheaper and easier to produce.
Overall, the largest number of deaths were found in Chicago, followed by Philadelphia and Detroit.
In some cases, the fentanyl was so powerful that it killed the people instantly, as soon as they took the drug.
The CDC reported their findings in the July 25th issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
