Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg have pledged nearly $500 million to help fight the global tobacco epidemic, as they have big plans in place.

The World Health Organization has reported that 5 million people are killed by tobacco each and every year.

The hope is to reduce these numbers, by focusing on the use of tobacco in developing countries such as India and China.

Bill Gates has been donating for years now, as he has already given $2 billion to AIDS programs around the world, as well as over $1 billion to fight malaria.

The new campaign Gates and Bloomberg are working on is called Mpower, combining the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use, along with the World Lung Foundation, WHO, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, CDC, and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

The hope is that with this new push in place, the tobacco epidemic can be reduced.
