Nexavar was developed by both Bayer, as well as Onyx Pharmaceuticals, and is part of a new class of cancer drugs known as kinase inhibitors.

Nexavar works by turning off the enzymes which lead to tumor cell growth or division, rather than waiting and attacking the tumor like other drugs in the past have.

The drug is the first in China to treat liver cancer without directly going after the tumors.

China reportedly has 340,000 new cases of liver cancer diagnosed each year.

Nexavar has received approval in 40 countries to treat liver cancer, and more than 70 countries to treat kidney cancer.

Bayer AG is also looking into other uses for Nexavar to treat other cancers.
