FDA Issues Warning, Maine Lobster Tomalley May Be Toxic
July 29, 2008
Portland (ChattahBox) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning for consumers to avoid eating Maine lobster tomalley, as they have stated that it may be toxic.
Maine lobster tomalley is the green substance found in the body of the lobster, and according to the FDA, may pose a health risk to consumers.
The warning has no impact at all on regular lobster meat, as no other meat on the lobster is affected.
The warning on Maine lobster tomalley comes after a red tide took place from New England to Canada this year.
The red tide managed to contaminate fishing locations, increasing toxin levels.
Those who consume toxic Maine lobster tomalley may show symptoms including headache, nausea, and muscle weakness.
