CDC Says Infant Deaths Increase Due To Preterm Births

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control's National Center for Health Statistics has reported an increase in the infant death rate due to more preterm births taking place..Washington (ChattahBox) – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics has reported an increase in the infant death rate due to more preterm births taking place.

A preterm birth occurs when an infant is born with a low birth weight.

The CDC believes that this is causing a rise in the U.S. infant mortality rate.

The overall U.S. infant mortality rate increased to 6.86 per 1,000 live births, according to the CDC.

Also reported was the fact that African-American infants are 2.4 t imes more likely to die compared to white infants.

Despite that fact, the infant mortality rate is up for white infants as well from the previous year to 5.73 per 1,000 births.

Nearly 50% of all infant deaths are caused by low-birth weight, suddent infant death syndrome, or congenital problems.
