The report released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) looked at data from 30,000 women who all attended birth defect centers across the U.S.

Whether a woman has type 1 or type 2 diabetes, the risk of a birth defect is still three to four times higher compared to pregnant women who do not have diabetes.

Birth defects continue to be the leading cause of infant deaths, with 1 in 33 infants having at least one defect.

Common birth defects linked to diabetic women included defects with the heart, spine, brain, limbs, kidneys, and more.

The study has been published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
