The National Institutes of Health funded the study which was led by Dr. Stephanie E. Chiuve of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

The study looked at 43,685 men, around 54-years old, as well as 71,243 women, all around 50-years old.

They were followed from 1986 until 2003, as their lifestyle was watched.

Women who followed a healthy lifestyle cut their stroke risk by 80%, while men cut their risk of stroke by nearly 70%.

A healthy lifestyle meant that they followed a plan to have normal body weight, take part in 30 minutes or more each day of exercise, drink alcohol in moderation, and have a healthy diet.

Taking a multi-vitamin for a period of at least 5 years was also required.

The study was published in the journal Circulation.
