October 30, 2008
Boston (ChattahBox) – Two new studies have revealed that aggressive treatment for the tiniest premature babies is extremely risky.
There were two studies, with the first being led by Dr. Brenda Morris of the University of Texas Medical School.
The study focused on a total of 1,974 infants who were less than 2 pounds in some cases.
What they found was that the risk of death in these babies was 13% higher if they recieved aggressive care in the form of light therapy.
This study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The second study looked at over 300 babies and found that insulin was not a good thing for the tiniest premature babies.
Insulin from birth increased the death risk of these infants by 12% overall.
