The population of people aged 65 and older in the U.S. continues to grow, and so do the number of hospitalizations due to heart failure.

Researchers led by Dr. Longjian Liu of Drexel University focused on data from over 2.2 million patients aged 65 and older from 1980 and 2006.

They found a 21% increase from 1980 to 2006 in the number of heart failure hospitalizations.

Looking at the hard numbers, the cases jumped from 348,866 in 1980 up to 807,082 in 2006.

This shows a need for better prevention methods to fight the spread.

The study was shown at a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans.
