Researchers from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore looked at thousands of surgeries to analyze their success rates.

From 1998 to 2007 they found that the most successful heart transplants were between people of the same gender.

Transplants carried out with two people of the same gender had a 13% lower risk of rejection, as well as a 25% lower risk of death within 30 days of the operation.
