December 1st, “World AIDS Day”

December 1, 2008

(ChattahBox) — AIDS remains the number one health threat to the human population to date today. December 01 is the World AIDS days and the disease still poses grave danger especially the black population in America. “AIDS in America is a black disease . . . about half of the just over 1 million Americans living with HIV or AIDS are black,” says Phill Wilson, Executive Director of the Black AIDS Institute.

But there is also a lot of positive news. Death rates from HIV and AIDS have declined considerably in past couple of years as a result of effective medication and earlier diagnosis and treatment of the same. Increased testing for the virus has helped the doctors to detect the disease at a stage when it is still “manageable”. Anti-retroviral drugs have improved significantly during the last decade that stop HIV virus from replicating. The new improved drugs have even helped the patients who were detected with drug-resistant strain of the virus in their body.

The US primary care representatives and physicians have also been promoting the awareness amongst the adult and the teen population to undergo HIV tests regularly. They have urged the people and teens about 13 years of age to undergo HIV test so that they do not become the silent carriers of the virus. Earlier the guidelines recommended HIV tests to only those who had high risk of getting the virus. According to the new guidelines in 2006, they have recommended a routine screening policy for HIV and the patients to get tested.

New hopes for the disease are also seen in Africa as a South African fertility clinic has started a service allowing couples infected with the virus to have a healthy baby. Cape fertility clinic is the first fertility clinic in Africa that allows HIV positive couples to give birth to HIV negative children with the help of in-vitro fertilization.

“Increased testing for the virus has helped the doctors to detect the disease at a stage when it is still curable.”

This is not a correct statement. That is no cure for HIV, and even with an undetectable viral load maintained with medications, the disease still progresses; albeit much more slowly, making it a more manageable chronic condition, but a lifelong condition none-the-less.
