New Camera Like Medical Pill Monitors Body and Drugs Interactions from the Inside

December 5, 2008

California (ChattahBox) – A new advancement in medical technology could have you swallowing more then a pill when your feeling ill. Proteus Biomedical, a leading company in medical technology, have released a mini-sized, edible camera that could be consumed along with drugs to monitor the effects on your health from an actual internal perspective.

Proteus’ product consists of two parts: an ingestible sensor chip and an external band-aid-like patch. The chips are just 1mm square and 200 microns thick and are attached to pills with a bio-compatible glue. When swallowed the chips send a signal to the patch. The patch has accelerometers and amplifiers to track heart rate, respiratory rate, temperature and body angle to determine if the patient is lying down or standing up. The cameras, eloquently dubbed ‘Raisin’, have been given the World Economic Forum’s ‘Technology Pioneer Award’, and is sparking interest in medical circles all over the world.

“We are enabling intelligent medicine by adding sensors to existing therapies so it can be personalized to every individual on a cost-effective basis,” says co-founder George Savage. “This provides automated physiological data that gets uploaded with a time stamp to the Internet, so when physicians see a patient for a few minutes they know exactly what is going on.”

The technology allows for automatic collection of vital patient data that can be used to manage chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. It can be particularly useful to closely track a patient’s response to a particular dosage of medicine. There have so far been two successful clinical trials, and while they have not yet received FDA approval, Proteus hopes to have the product officially on sale and in use by 2011, an ambitious goal given the nature of this technology.

While this is not the first attempt at tailor-made health treatments to be put on the drawing board, it is certainly one of the most intriguing.
