Major Medical Breakthrough? – ‘Instant Immunity’ Given Against Diseases By New Vaccine

March 6, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – Researchers at Scripps Research Institute have made an incredible discovery: a vaccination that could instantaneously protect again various viruses, diseases, and even cancers.

The vaccination was first tested on mice that had colon cancer. The antibodies were tailor-made, and injected into the animals. The results showed an immediate binding against the cancer.

“The antibodies in our vaccine are designed to circulate inertly until they receive instructions from tailor-made small molecules to become active against a specific target,” Carlos Barbas III, who led the project, explained.

“The advantage of this method is that it opens up the possibility of having antibodies primed and ready to go in the time it takes to receive an injection or swallow a pill.”

The work has so far only been tested on mice affected by melanoma or colon cancer, but three clinical trials are being conducted by Pfizer to test the new approach against different types of cancer and diabetes.

The work is published in the early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
