Polypill Study Shows Great Promise to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke

(ChattahBox)–A recent study conducted in India by British researchers, shows great promise for the prevention of heart disease and strokes in middle aged patients. The study, led by Dr SalimYusuf of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, treated 2,053 individuals, free of heart disease with a “polypill ” containing five medicines in one pill. The study patients all had heart disease risk factors, such as high blood pressure or a history of smoking.

The results of the study showed a substantial reduction in both blood pressure and cholesterol levels. These results show promise for the polypill to potentially reduce strokes and heart attacks by an average of 50 percent in middle-aged people, saving millions of lives in the process.

The polypill contained aspirin, a statin to lower cholesterol, three blood pressure-lowering drugs and folic acid. The compounded pill acted the same as five single pills of the same ingredients, without side effects. Advocates of the polypill concept, preventing heart disease and stroke, say it can save lives.

Additionally, taking just one pill for many patients is more desirable psychologically than taking handfuls. People are less apt to forget to take their medicine if it consist of just one pill, and doctors say it makes them feel less ill. Combining multiple drugs into one pill is also much cheaper, than paying for separate medications.

Critics of the polypill say it may lead to patients foregoing diet and exercise as a way to control high blood pressure and cholesterol, which also provide additional health benefits to patients. Doctors say people need to do both; take a polypill as well as living a healthy lifestyle with a low fat diet and regular exercise.

Researchers expect the polypill will garner FDA approval in the U.S. as more studies are conducted.

Talk about a blockbuster pill! If this Indian company gets a go-ahead from the FDA its pill (polycapsule.com), the value of the company will make it an all-time high flier! Wish I owned its stock.
