Oral Contracpetion Found To Effect Muscle Growth For Young Women

April 17, 2009

Louisiana (ChattahBox) – A gathering of medical researchers at the 122nd Annual Meeting of the American Physiological Society are scheduled to hear the findings on a new study that compared to effects of oral contraception on young women.

The study, conducted by researchers from the Department of Health and Kinesiology at Texas A&M University, as well as the Human Energy Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh, has found that oral contraception has a negative effect on the muscle growth and strength in women under the age of 35.

The study was done on two groups of women between the ages of 18 and 31. One group consisted of women who regularly took oral birth control, and the second group were women who used non-oral methods. They were then given a protein-rich diet plan, and supervised exercise program specifically designed to create muscle growth and tone.

Not only were the muscle gains of the young women on oral contraception significantly lower (60% less gain), but they also were found to have much lower levels of necessary hormones for healthy muscle growth in women.

Of course, this is specifically directed at young women who are active and have a need to gain higher percentages of muscle mass, rather than in the context of the majority of women who may choose oral contraception.

The study and it’s findings will be released to APS during their annual gathering April 18 – 22.

It’s “affect” in the context used in the title. The way it’s written, the title means “Oral Contracpetion Found To Cause Muscle Growth For Young Women.” and I’m pretty sure that’s the opposite of the article’s content. I’d advise the use of a spell-checker, too. I’m pretty sure you mean “contraception.”
