Device Gives Hope To Asthma Sufferers

May 19, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – A treatment known as Bronchial Thermoplasty may offer new hope for severe asthma sufferers, after trials proved that a device significantly reduces common lung constriction.

The Alair® Bronchial Thermoplasty System by Asthmatx was originally tested in a blind study in 2005, but it wasn’t until recent trials that the true benefit for those suffering from asthma could be seen.

“The amount of their improvement surprised us,” Dr. Mario Castro, M.D, said.

“One of the reasons I find this treatment exciting is that many patients with severe asthma are already taking the best drug therapy we have and are still experiencing debilitating symptoms. This device provides a meaningful new treatment for such patients.”

Those who were given the Alair® treatment were found to have a 32% improvement in general symptoms, and a staggering 84% reduction in ER visits.

The findings are set to be released at the American Thoracic Society conference this week.
