Promising New Treatment for Kids With Crohn’s Disease

June 17, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Researchers from Israel have discovered a promising new nutritional therapy for children suffering from inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD that replaces steroid medications causing harmful side effects, with a nutritional formula originally developed to nourish astronauts. The nutritional formula not only eases the painful symptoms of IBD, but also causes the disease to go into remission.

Although Crohn’s disease, the most prevalent type of IBD, is usually diagnosed in the late teens and early twenties, about 20 percent of Crohn’s cases affects children under the age of 15. The devastating effects of the chronic inflammation of the digestive track, cause pain and severe diarrhea.

The constant diarrhea by itself can slow growth and development in children, which is made worse by steroids that also retard growth.

Dr. Raanan Shamir of Tel Aviv University’s Sackler School of Medicine, conducted a study proving that liquid nutritional therapy is as effective as steroids in children, used as a first-line therapy for Crohn’s disease, without the malnutrition and growth retardation side effects.

Although the nutritional therapy takes a significant commitment from the child and the family to make it work, it’s well worth the effort. Shair says a child should be on the therapy for at least 6 to 8 weeks for the disease to go into remission.

After remission, a child with Chrohn’s would need to continue a maintenance dose of the nutritional therapy to ensure the disease doesn’t flare up.

The study is available in the latest issue of the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition.

Actually, this is not a newly discovered therapy, it has been around for 40 years but is rarely offered to patients in the US these days. I wrote a book on this very subject (just published June 15) because I felt the therapy deserved to be more widely known and available. For those who might be interested, the book is called Beat Crohn’s! Getting to Remission with Enteral Nutrition (Solutions, 2009).
