Possible New Treatment to Completely Wipe Out Aids Virus from the Body

June 22, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Researchers have discovered a possible new treatment method that could completely eradicate the HIV-Aids virus from the body, leaving a patient disease free. This new research has exciting implications for the future treatment of HIV-Aids which killed two million people worldwide in 2007, according to WHO statistics.

A team of researchers from the VGTI Florida and the University of Montreal were determined to find the source of the HIV virus in the body, which still lingered, even after extensive antiviral treatments. Modern HIV drugs can significantly slow the progression of the disease leading to long-term survival for 90 percent of patients.

However, the virus is never fully wiped out. The researchers were successful in locating the hiding place in the body where the HIV virus remains and they also discovered how the disease continues to multiply in the hidden areas. These new findings may lead to a development of a new drug treatment that has the potential to completely eradicate the virus.

Conducting something of a scientific treasure hunt, the researchers found the HIV virus hidden in memory T-cells, which form part of the body’s immune system. By hiding out in the body’s immune system, the virus remains safe from antiviral drugs that work in other areas of the body.

Perhaps the most significant finding from their research, involves how the HIV virus replicates itself in the memory T-cells. The researchers found that the virus doesn’t actually replicate like it does in other cells of the body. Instead, the HIV virus remains viable by cell division.

Armed with this new invaluable knowledge, scientists can now work on developing a drug treatment that stops cell division in infected memory T-cells. Combined with current anti viral therapy, the new treatment may “…eliminate the reservoirs of HIV that currently persist within the human body, leaving an individual disease-free,” said lead researcher Dr. Rafick-Pierre Sékaly.

The researchers plan to test the new methods of treatments on animals, before human clinical trials can be conducted.

The study is available in the new edition of the journal Nature Medicine.

im doing a paper in my science class about the human body and were allowed to pick a disease.
i picked aids, and i was wondering if you can get me back on my email and
give a little more information on how the future treatment is supposed to work.
