Cancer Cells To Be Targeted By Nano Cells, Study Suggests

June 29, 2009

Australia (ChattahBox) – A new treatment study has given scientists the potential to target cancerous cells with a ‘trojan horse’ nano cell, rather than with regular chemotherapy.

The study has been in the testing process for over two years now, with mice that have been infected with human cancer cells being treated with the nano cells. The survival rate has been an incredible 100%

The hope is that these nano cells will carry chemotherapy directly to the cancerous cells, targeting them while leaving healthy cells alone, making treatment for cancer both more effective, and less damaging to the body as a whole.

It will also work to eliminate the resistant proteins that are produced by other cells, which make it harder for chemotherapy to continue working on all infected cells.

“We are playing the rogue cells at their own game. They switch-on the gene to produce the protein to resist drugs, and we are switching-off the gene which, in turn, enables the drugs to enter,” Dr Jennifer MacDiarmid, who leads the study alongside Dr Himanshu Brahmbhatt, was quoted by Reuters.

The study results have been published in the scientific journal Nature.
