Boys Will Be Vaccinated For HPV, UK Decides

July 2, 2009

UK (ChattahBox) – Doctors with the British Medical Association have voted to offer the HPV vaccine to boys in order to reduce the risk of infection leading to cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer, a notoriously deadly form of the disease, is caused by the papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that causes genital warts.

The suggestion of vaccinating boys in order to reduce transmission to their future sexual partners was brought up during a medical conference in Liverpool, England, where it was approved by vote.

But that wasn’t the only issue that was brought up.

“A 24-year-old with a family history of early cervical cancer who asks for screening is made more anxious by the information that she is too young and has to wait a year. Is it ethical to refuse these women a smear when it is possible to pick up changes to the cervix at a stage early enough to effect a cure?” Dr Mary McCarthy was quoted by The Telegraph.

The age of screening in the UK has now been lowered from 25 to 20 years old.
