Novartis announces Influenza A HINI (Swine Flu) vaccine works with single dose

September 3, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Swiss drug maker Novartis today said in an e-mailed statement today, its newly developed vaccine ‘Celtura’ against Influenza A HINI (Swine Flu) has shown surprisingly effective results during an initial pilot test program.  Results from the tests  conducted on 100 healthy volunteers showed that it was possible to induce protective antibodies against the H1N1 virus within two weeks of giving a single low-dose vaccine rather than two as previously expected, a finding that could potentially boost global supplies.

In all 80% of the volunteers showed a “strong, potentially protective” response after one dose, with more than 90% showing the same response after two doses. According to industry experts, a vaccine response of above 60 per cent can be termed as successful and has the potential to hit the market soon.

“The pilot results are encouraging,” Novartis CEO Vaccines and Diagnostics Andrin Oswald said, adding “the study suggests that while two doses seem to provide better protection, one dose of our adjuvanted Celtura vaccine may be sufficient to protect adults against the swine flu.”

The vaccine, which will be called Celtura, is already proceeding to clinical trials that will include more than 6,000 adults and children.

In few people severe complications like Influenza pneumonia (primary) may be encountered, which is life threatening. This is caused by the virus and can be dangerous if not treated immediately in a hospital. The viral infection destroys the respiratory tract lining and there in can allow bacterial infections. A secondary bacterial pneumonia may need antibiotic treatment in a hospital.Read more…..
