Swine Flu Vaccine Profits Drugmakers, Retail Chains

October 15, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Drugmakers and retail drug store and supermarket chains are benefiting from the double demand for vaccines this year, with the swine flu vaccine tacked on to the normal seasonal flu vaccine. The drugmakers are reaping increased profits from the production of the two vaccines and retail chains that administer the shots are also benefiting from customers who pay the full price of the shot and from increased sales of their goods.

Drug companies have already sold $1.5 billion worth of swine flu shots, in addition to the $1 billion for seasonal flu vaccine. Drugmakers Sanofi-Pasteur, Glaxo Smith Kline and Novartis have received most of the profits from the increased vaccine sales.

And taxpayers are paying for the increased costs for the 250 million doses of swine flu vaccines, which will be delivered to doctors, pharmacies and schools.

Pharmacies and supermarkets administering the shots charge co-payments or full price of about $25 for uninsured customers and also enjoy increased sales from the increased traffic of people seeking flu shots.

Cassie Richardson, spokesperson for SUPERVALU said, “Flu shots present a good opportunity to bring new customers into our stores.”

Some doctors are not happy about the entry of retail chains into the flu shot market saying, it deprives doctors of income needed to cover the cost of doing business.

Non-medical businesses are also benefiting from the surge in vaccines. UPS has experienced a jump in deliveries, as vaccines need to be shipped in specially designed containers.

Our family will not be getting this one. We have really been making sure to take other safe precautions though like extra hand washing and our Vidazorb chewable probiotic every single day to boost our immunities!!
