Study Show More Men Watch Porn, But Viewing Healthy

February 12, 2010

Australia (ChattahBox) – A new study has found that 70% of men admit to regularly watching porn, and 30% of women admit to doing the same. But it only becomes a problem when it can be classified as an addiction.

For the most part viewing porn is a healthy expression of sexuality, and when done in moderation has no visible negative effects on the viewer.

However, Internet porn addiction is a growing problem, with some people spending between 16 and 18 hours a day viewing websites.

The problem is thought to be the easy access coupled with some people being prone towards addictive behavior.

“Viewing porn online becomes a major problem only when people become so preoccupied that they spend 16 to 18 hours a day doing nothing else but watching porn, with serious impacts on relationships, work, studies, and finance,” University of Sydney professor Dr Gomathi Sitharthan said of the findings.

“In recent years we have seen increasing numbers of clients coming to counselling practices with online porn addictions. They come from all walks of life: students, teachers, lawyers, health practitioners and priests.

“Often they will come to counseling with another problem, and the underlying problem of addiction to internet porn may come out after two or three sessions.

“The sensitive nature of this issue means many people find it very hard to talk about.”

I’m not sure the number of viewing hours is the best way to tell if someone has an addiction to internet porn. Men who only view for 1 hour a day (or even less) can still develop an unhealthy obsession, which runs for many more hours in their own minds.

Amen Jason. When the article says there are no visible negative effects of watching porn they are somewhat correct. Most of the damage is internal and the addicts can hide any manifestations when they pop up. Porn destroys how you relate to others, intimacy and many other ways..
