(ChattahBox Health News) – After a laborious study conducted in the USA, it has been discovered that 1 in 5 gay men in the USA may suffer from HIV. According to the research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many of the men are also unaware that they carry the virus. The study took place over a period of 21 days and involved 8,000 men from 21 cities, ranking as one of the most comprehensive performed by the CDC.
The research concluded that young sexually active men and minority individuals are not aware of their health status. Even if the rates of the infection among men having sex with other men are rising, other groups at risk (like intravenous drug users and heterosexuals) seem to qualify for a lower infection percentage.
The conclusions were disclosed on Thursday, a few days from The National Gay Men’s HIV Awareness Day, due to take place on Monday.
Kevin Fenton, one of the CDC officials told the Washington Post “This study’s message is clear: HIV exacts a devastating toll on men who have sex with men in America’s major cities, and yet far too many of those who are infected don’t know it.”
