If You Insist on Reading Drudge, Click Beyond the Headlines
October 27, 2010
(ChattahBox Op/Ed) – In my opinion Matt Drudge is a coward and doesn’t exhibit any sense of original thought. He cares nothing about the truth, and his agenda, and he has a Constitutional right to that agenda, is clearly so far to the right it’s almost come full circle to the left.
Why should I care? Why would I waste my time and energy writing about this slug? It’s a fair question with an answer that may even be seen as counter-intuitive. As of this moment, his own reported web stats show the following with respect to visitors:
791,691,457 IN PAST 31 DAYS
8,878,920,720 IN PAST YEAR
That’s a whole lot of freaking eyes, don’t you think? It’s an amazing accomplishment given that barely a single word on his site is original. He seems to have no journalistic ability, and apparently has not a scintilla of objectivity. As a result of this exercise in narcissism, Matt Drudge made himself a millionaire by being the darling of the radical right in this country, and with that said, what truly defies explanation is that for no rational reason he has turned his bare bones aggregate site into a multi-million dollar fountain of good fortune. Yes, I visit this site for obvious reasons, but lately I am getting thin skinned about his non stop attacks of President Obama and the Democrats. Matt Drudge in my opinion, HATES President Obama, and his vitriol and extreme slating of stories is so filled with hate and racial undertones it makes one wonder if my desired success mandates that we throw away all conventional wisdom and start playing by the rules he does.
But my reason for writing this today is a bit deeper than jealousy or disbelief. As I have been writing this column for just over two weeks now and though the work on my media training Blog (www.mediatraining.me), I have seen a terrific increase in the defense of what I write that people disagree with and their sourced information can be traced to headlines on his site, not the content it links to.
It’s bad enough that he takes a simple story and writes a headline that often has little to do with the content of the story being written, because many, many people never read more than a headline, and he knows that. What makes him so effective is that as he appeals to the same uneducated, white, NASCAR loving, trailer park living, I’m going to vote against my own interests all American male.
This is not a smart practice in the bigger picture. Have you even seen a speech or a written piece authored by him that showed great educated expression and defined a position that used facts to support his point of view. Of course not. Sadly, as the visitation numbers I posted above prove, millions of the above defined people who visit this site every day have made him some kind of hero for the right that feel they have been undeserved by “the media”.
But again, my greater concern is his hatred for anything Democrat or anything Obama. His constant abuse of information for the purpose of lying to people for the sole purpose of creating more hate is wrong at any level. It’s one thing to have a point of view, as I do and my colleagues on this site do, but it’s quite another to take the hard work of others and misrepresent it for the laser focused purpose of creating a culture of hate and lies and I see it on every political message board I belong to.
Of course this says volumes about the American reader, does it not? Most free thinking people see right through this effort of Drudge, but most people are not free thinkers, sadly. And I could certainly make the case that the success of his site is a classic tale of capitalism at its best. But when the goal is generate lies for the purpose of creating hate what you have in effect done is build an information factory that employees no one and profits by subverting truth.
Matt Drudge does not seem to have the best interests of this country in his heart.
A headline today says “Hillary Flees USA for Election”. Most people who see that will NOT click through and read the story that our Secretary of State is on a two week Asian trip of goodwill, will they? Nope and he is counting on that. Another headline reads, “Reid: Free Food at Turnout Events”, which is supposed to tell us that the Harry Reid campaign can only draw people to rallies by giving hem free food. Many political tallies have free food at them, but who cares about truth, because if you’re a Drudge reader you’re only reading the headline which you will repeat on message boards all over the internet as some kind of truth.
How about this headline: “Obama to Hunt for Jobs – In India”. Guess what, that is a good thing Drudge.
I could spend all day pointing out the lies of these headlines, and I can only hope that some of you will begin to advocate for the truth and send people away from his site and to outlets like this one that brings facts and opinions that are based on truth.
The hate campaign that Drudge is on will go on as long as millions of undereducated and under-informed people visit, and I may not be able to stop that, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a certain obligation to tell the truth and try to get you to embrace that truth.
I haven’t even gotten into the numerous times he has “broke” a story only to retract it. Or how many times he sourced information that he had to hide from later on.
Matt Drudge is an opportunist in my opinion. This type of pandering does no good and I can only hope that more and more of you will begin to read beyond the headline. If you do you will find that the relationship between the headlines he writes and the content he uses has no relationship in fact. Isn’t that enough to prove my point or is it easier to believe the lies. I mean clicking on a link does take effort, maybe too much effort for some of you. Maybe if we made a mouse that looked like remote control more people would begin to see the truth!
