NASA received the images from the MESSENGER on January 14, marking the first images since the Mariner 10 spacecraft did a flyby in 1974.

Among the findings from researchers, they noted that volcano system on the planet actually helped form its smooth shape, and that the magnetic field of mercury is similar to that of the core on Earth.

The most startling discovery though by the NASA MESSENGER spacecraft is that the planet Mercury has shrunk by more than a mile in diameter over its life.

This was attributed to the gradual cooling of its core.

The NASA MESSENGER will make 3 more flybys on October 6, 2008, and September 29, 2009. The last one will be on March 18, 2011.
