Researchers from the University of Duisberg-Essen carried out a study on herds of cows and deer.

For the study, they used images from Google Earth to look at 8,510 images of cows on 308 different pastures.

They watched the cows, and realized that over 70% of them were lined up along the North-South axis of the Earth’s magnetic field. This is an amazing discovery, as they would line up pointing North.

This goes against the past thought that cows did this to protect themselves from the wind. Instead, it appears that they have their own built-in compass.

Researchers looked at cows from 5 different continents before reporting their findings in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
