Prostate Tissue Grown From Adult Stem Cell By Scientists
October 23, 2008
Washington (ChattahBox) - Researchers from Genentech have confirmed that they have been able to grow a prostate from a single adult stem cell.
Researchers, led by Wei-Qiang Gao at Genentech Inc. discovered that they could use a single stem cell from an adult to grow a prostate.
This is big news as it could lead to a new way to treat prostate cancer and other diseases.
This builds on past research which has shown that a single stem cell can be used to grow a full organ in the form of tissue regrowth, or repair.
Researchers tested this out on mice by taking a single adult stem cell from the prostate and putting it in a gel.
They were then able to use this stem cell to grow functional prostate tissue.
The study was published in the journal Nature.
