New Purple Tomato May Be Key To Long, Healthy Life
October 27, 2008
Washington (ChattahBox) - Scientists from John Innes Centre in Norwich have been able to create a purple tomato that could be the key to a long and healthy life.
The purple tomatoes were made from scientists from the genes of the snapdragon flower, which is very high in anthocyanin.
Research in the past has shown that anthocyanin can actually slow the growth of cancer cells.
They took these newly created purple tomatoes and tested them on mice.
They gave one group of mice which prone to cancer the tomatoes, while another group did not get the tomatoes.
The mice that consumed the purple tomatoes were able to have longer lives and were more able to fight off cancer.
The purple tomatoes also helped prevent cardiovascular disease.
The study was published in the journal Nature Biotechnology.
