Russia Engineers Goats That Give Human Breastmilk

February 11, 2009

Russia (ChattahBox) – Russian researchers have begun genetically modifying goats to produce human breast milk, in an attempt to allow mothers who cannot produce their own milk to give their babies the important nutrients of breast feeding.

Beyond the hopes for creating viable feeding methods for women who have trouble with lactation, they also hope to create further studies into new antibiotic drugs, based on the protein lactoferrin.

β€œThe new genetic engineering program will be aimed at producing milk with the human protein, as well as making medicines from it,” Dr Pyotr Vitsyaz said in an official statement.

He also hopes to offer this new milk to adults, so they can get greater protein in their foods, then with regular milk.
