Unknown Asteroid Streaks Past Earth In Near Collision

March 2, 2009

Australia (ChattahBox) Australian astronomers were shocked when they witnessed a small asteroid streaking across the sky in the Pacific, in a near-miss that has surprised many.

The asteroid named DD45 2009 was far from expected, and the 200-foot chunk of rock, about the size of the one that leveled the forest in Tunguska a century ago, seemed to come out of nowhere as it passed just a few tens of thousands of miles away from Earth.

If it had hit, the astronomers say that it would have caused an explosion of nuclear proportions.
