Stem Cell Treatment for Breast Enlargement Being Trialed in UK

March 29, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Not sure anyone envisioned stem cells being used for this purpose but a hospital in England is planning a trial to achieve ‘natural’ breast enlargement using cells from spare fat. Professor Kefah Mokbel, a consultant breast surgeon at the London Breast Institute at the Princess Grace Hospital, is in charge of a project to use the technique on healthy women who want larger breasts. He told the Sunday Times: ‘They [breasts treated with stem cells] feel more natural because this tissue has the same softness as the rest of the breast.’

The procedure involves taking cells from fat on the stomach or thighs and growing them in a woman’s breasts, resulting in a likely increase of one cup size, with the additional benefit of reducing stomach fat.
The technique, which has been used in Japan for six years, would make breasts bigger, but does not provide uplift or firmness.

Dr. Mokbel believes the treatment is safe, and predicts that private patients will be able to pay for the procedure within six months at a significant cost of about £6,500 or about $9,300.  The method has so far only been used in the UK to repair the breasts of women with breast deformities following removal of cancerous lumps. Medical authorities warn the technology should not be offered until large-scale trials in cancer patients have shown that it is safe and effective.
