First Native American Links Conclusively Proven In DNA Study

May 4, 2009

California (ChattahBox) – A new study done at UC Davis has given the first conclusive evidence that proves that Native Americans come from a single ancestral group, toppling past theories of multiple sources.

DNA was examined from a number of different tribes, and the results all pointed to a single genetic grouping.

“Our work provides strong evidence that, in general, Native Americans are more closely related to each other than to any other existing Asian populations,” study author Kari Britt Schroeder explained, “except those that live at the very edge of the Bering Strait.”

The study was based off of former research that found an unique genetic strand known as the “9-repeat allele”, which showed a marker unlike others found in Asian-originating communities. When subjects were examined, the variant was found in one out of every three of the 908 tested.

This variant seemed to prove the theory that all Native American groups had likely originated from a single mass group, and so the allele was passed genetically through the lines.

“If natural selection had promoted the spread of a neighboring advantageous allele, we would expect to see longer stretches of DNA than this with a similarly distinct pattern, and we would also have expected to see the pattern in a high frequency even among people who do not carry the 9-repeat allele. So we can now consider the positive selection possibility unlikely,” Schroeder said of their findings.

The study was published in the May 2009 edition of Molecular Biology and Evolution.
