Blue Whales Migrating From Current Habitat, Says NOAA

May 12, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – A press release by the National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has said that for the first time since 1965, blue whales are beginning to migrate back to areas once famous for whaling.

Commercial whaling was outlawed in 1965, after over 50 years of killing the giant mammals reduced their numbers significantly. It also forced them to gather off the coast of California, leaving behind those areas where whaling was most prominent.

But for the first time blue whales are moving off of the coast, and migrating back to Alaska, and British Columbia.

There is no certain reason why this would be occurring, although most scientists agree it has to do with shifting ocean conditions that are forcing whales food source from the area.
