Scientists Find Ancient Lake On Mars

June 18, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – NASA’s HiRISE device has taken detailed images of what scientists say is proof of an ancient lake on the surface of Mars, which further demonstrates the possibility of life having been at one time possible of the Red Planet.

The HiRISE (or High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) is a sophisticated piece of camera technology that is being used to greater explore the surface of Mars. That search has led to an incredible discovery that could lead scientists to knowledge of the planet’s past.

“This is the first unambiguous evidence of shorelines on the surface of Mars,” University of Colorado at Bolder researcher Gaetano Di Achille was quoted by Eureka Alert.

“The identification of the shorelines and accompanying geological evidence allows us to calculate the size and volume of the lake, which appears to have formed about 3.4 billion years ago.”

The former lake is estimates at over 1,500 feet deep, and stretches over an almost 80 square mile distance. It is believed to have disappeared after a sudden change in the planet’s climate caused the lake to either evaporate, or freeze over, vaporizing over time.
