Dinos May Have Been Half The Size Once Believed, Study Says

June 22, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – A new study has shown that the mathematical model used to calculate dinosaur’s sizes may have been flawed, meaning that many were not nearly as large as originally believed.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado, and according to them many dinos may be as little as half the size originally recorded.

“Palaeontologists have for 25 years used a published statistical model to estimate body weight of giant dinosaurs and other extraordinarily large animals in extinct lineages,” Dr Gary Packard, leader researcher on the project, was quoted by The Daily Mail.

“By re-examining data in the original reference sample, we show that the statistical model is seriously flawed and that the giant dinosaurs probably were only about half as heavy as is generally believed.”

The results of the study have been published in the Journal of Zoology.
