‘Self Help’ May Hurt More Than It Helps, Study Says
July 4, 2009
Canada (ChattahBox) - According to a study done by the University of Waterloo and the University of New Brunswick, self-help books and programs may actually have negative effects on those with low self esteem, who are more likely to seek self-help.
The study took participants with both high and low self esteem, and had them repeat the phrase ‘I am a lovable person’ multiple times, a BBC News report explained. Afterward, they tested a person’s mood and asked them about how they felt.
In almost every case, those with low self esteem felt more depressed, while those with high self esteem felt marginally better than before.
Alternately, those with low self esteem seemed to feel significantly better after being allowed to list negative qualities about themselves.
The study has been published in the journal Psychological Science.
