White Wine May Be Bad For The Teeth, Studies Show

Germany (ChattahBox) – A new study by a team from the Johannes Gutenberg University has found the white wine can break down enamel, causing tooth erosion over time.
The researchers placed several adult teeth in glasses of wine for 24 hours. The teeth that had been soaking in white wine showed a significant bit of damage, as the acidity cause the enamel to break down.
Red wine showed quite a bit less damage to the teeth, as the acidity is less severe.
But if you prefer white, and drink it on a regular basis, the study shows hope for countering the effects:
“The tradition of enjoying different cheeses for dessert, or in combination with drinking wine, might have a beneficial effect on preventing dental erosion since cheeses contain calcium in a high concentration.”
They also suggest drinking the wine with food, as the saliva produced from chewing may help to dilute the acid, and so provide some protection against erosion.
