Alcohol and Tobacco More Damaging Than Speed or LSD, New Study Says
November 1, 2010
(ChattahBox Science News) -If scientists were to classify drugs based on how much harm they caused, alcohol would be ranked a Class A substance, more dangerous than even heroin and crack, according to a new British study. In addition, the scientists ranked tobacco and cannabis more harmful than ecstasy, methadone, or LSD, the UK Telegraph reports.
After slating each drug in nine categories, including death and loss of relationships, the scientists ranked alcohol the most damaging, with a 72 out of 100, vs. 55 for heroin and 54 for crack in terms of overall harm caused, the Telegraph said, citing a scientific study published in the medical journal Lancet. Former UK government drugs adviser David Nutt led the study, and he called on the government to create a new drug classification system.
Nutt said that based on overall harm, a potential new classification system could rank alcohol, heroin, and crack Class A (the most harmful), followed by tobacco, cannabis, and cocaine as Class B, and Ecstasy and LSD Class D, the lowest category.
British government officials have not yet read the report, so it could not be determined whether it would consider altering its drug classification system based on the information, the Telegraph reports.
