Landon Donovan to join German champion Bayern Munich on loan

November 22, 2008

Germany (ChattahBox) — Similar to the one David Beckham has agreed with AC Milan, Landon Donovan will join German champion Bayern Munich in a loan deal.  Bayern’s manager Uli Hoeness said in an interview posted Friday on the Web site of the Munich-based Sueddeutsche newspaper, that Donovan will in any case now play for the team until March 15.Hoeness told the newspaper that Bayern would make no other transfers until the summer and would not release any players, including striker Lukas Podolski, who will get more competition now from Donovan. Bayern coach Juergen Klinsmann had said previously he was interested in keeping Donovan until the end of the season.

Donovan has a contract with MLS until 2011, and he has just concluded a 10-day practice stint with Bayern, likely to keep fit. Both Donovan and Beckham play for the Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer. Donovan led the league with 20 goals in 25 games for the Galaxy this season, has just been voted American football’s Player of the Year for a record fifth time and is the U.S. national team’s all-time leading scorer.
It will be Donovan’s third attempt to break through in the Bundesliga. His previous two attempts, both with Bayer Leverkusen, were failures. Donovan can play as a forward or midfielder.
