Hockey Legend Guy Lafleur, “The Flower” Found Guilty of Perjury

May 2, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Hockey legend Guy Lafleur, “The Flower,” was found guilty on Friday in a Montreal court, of giving contradictory evidence at his son’s bail hearing two years ago. He must return to court for sentencing on June 18 and Crown prosecutor Lori-Renee Weitzman is considering a term of house arrest. Lafleur’s attorney is arguing for a fine, saying his client already suffered enough with the humiliation of his arrest by Montreal police.

Mr. Lafleur became entangled in this mess when he testified at a bail hearing for his troubled son Mark, vouching for Mark’s compliance with a court-ordered curfew, saying Mark was home with his parents during a weekend away from rehab.

Hotel receipts proved later that Mark was actually at a hotel for two nights with his 16-year old girlfriend. Guy later admitted to condoning the hotel rendezvous and even was the one who drove his son to the hotel. Mark is now 24-years old. Guy Lafleur insisted his son still complied with the terms of his curfew, just not at home.

A warrant was soon issued for Guy Lafleur’s arrest, which was later found to be illegal and he is now suing both the Montreal police and Crown for $3.5-million in civil damages.

In the midst of the charges against his father, Mark pleaded guilty in February to various criminal charges, including uttering death threats, forcible confinement and assault and was sentenced to 15-months of home confinement.

Guy Lafleur, as the elder statesman and Canadian hockey ambassador has been the subject of a media frenzy during this whole affair. Lafleur, nicknamed the Blond Demon, played 17 seasons in the NFL from 1971 until 1991 and led the Canadians to five Stanley Cups. He is considered one of the greatest right-wingers in hockey.

The maximum penalty for giving contradictory evidence in court is zero to 14 years in prison. Guy Lafleur is hoping for a fine.
