Sooner Great and NBA Star Wayman Tisdale Has Died of Cancer

May 15, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Great athlete, musician and man, Wayman Tisdale has lost his battle to cancer at the age of 44.  Tisdale was a three-time All-American at Oklahoma in the mid-1980s before playing a dozen years in the NBA and later becoming an accomplished jazz musician.  More then that Tisdale was known as a true class act, on and off the court.

The 6-foot-9 forward, with a soft left-handed touch on the court, starred for three years at Oklahoma, before jumping to the NBA. He played for the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns, and averaged 15.3 points for his career. He was on the U.S. team that won the gold medal in the 1984 Olympics.

Tisdale learned he had a form of bone cancer below his right knee after breaking his leg in a fall at his home in Los Angeles on Feb. 8, 2007. He said then he was fortunate to have discovered the cancer early but after several rounds of intense chemotherapy treatment did not work, his leg was amputated last August to prevent the cancer from spreading. He was fitted with a crimson prosthetic leg in tribute to his school colors and continued to perform at shows until his early demise.  Rest in peace Wayman!
