Michael Curry fired as Pistons coach – could Bill Laimbeer be next coach?

June 30, 2009

(ChattahBox) — This is a very strange twist indeed. Michael Curry has been fired as coach of the Detroit Pistons, lasting only one season as Flip Saunders’ replacement, according to MLive.com.

“This was a difficult decision to make,” Pistons president Joe Dumars said. “I want to thank Michael for his hard work and dedication to the organization. However, at this time, I have decided to make a change.”

It’s not so shocking that he was fired given that the Pistons faltered this past season at 39-43 under Curry. In the 2007-08 season, the Pistons were 59-23 with Saunders.  There were rumors that he lost the respect of his players, but why now instead of right after the season ended.  Normally you want your coach onboard before you go into the draft.  With Bill Laimbeer recently stepping down as coach of the Detroit Shock just 2 weeks ago, could he have been lined up first to replace Curry?
