Serena’s F-Bomb Tirade Gives Match Point to Clijsters

September 13, 2009

(ChattahBox)—The U.S. Open semi-final match on Saturday between Serena Williams and Kim Clijsters, was a highly anticipated match up between two former U.S. Open champions and it didn’t disappoint on the intensity and high level of play between the two tennis dynamos.

But no one predicted Williams losing the match point to a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, after Williams went on a tirade against a lineswoman, dropping the F-bomb several times.

Williams lost her cool, after a suspect foot fault call when she missed her first serve when she was down 15-30 in the second set. Replays didn’t conclusively show that Williams’ foot touched the baseline.

At this point in the match, every point counted, Williams was tiring and Clijsters seemed the stronger player, as she continued to gain momentum.

The foot fault call gave Clijsters a match point and Williams became enraged and approached the lineswoman who made the call, dropping the F-bomb.

The resulting double fault gave Clijsters match point. Serena angrily confronted the lineswoman who made the call, dropping the f-bomb, getting in her face and waving her racket and ball angrily saying, “I swear to God I’m [expletive] going to take this [expletive] ball and shove it down your [expletive] throat, you hear that? I swear to God.”

That episode was a bit too much for the line judges to take and Williams was hit for a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct. Unfortunately, that was Williams’ second code violation of the match. Earlier, she was issued a sanction for racket abuse.

So, with two code violations, the rules mandated that a point be awarded to Clijsters, which turned out to be the last point of the match. Game, set match; Willams lost the match on two technicalities.

Williams walked over to Clijsters after the end of the match and apologized. Clijsters said, “The timing was unfortunate, but there are rules.”

Williams denied that she threatened the lineswoman and said she no longer even remembers what she said in the heat of anger. “I don’t think it’s necessary [to describe the outburst]. I’m trying to move on. I wasn’t called for a foot fault all year until I got to New York, said Williams.

Meanwhile, Clijsters will play in Sunday’s prime-time final against 19-year-old Dane Caroline Wozniacki.
