United States Advances to 2010 World Cup

(ChattahBox) – The U.S. topped Honduras to earn a World Cup spot in a match played before 30,00 screaming fans at San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Conor Casey was the US star after not having scored in 14 previous international appearances. Casey notched 2 goals, and Landon Donovan added another as the United States clinched its sixth straight World Cup berth with a game to spare in a frantic 3-2 victory over Honduras and a berth in the 2010 World Cup, which opens next June in South Africa. All five goals came in the second half of this mesmerizing end-to-end match. Carlos Pavon had a chance to tie following a hand ball in the penalty area by Jonathan Spector. Pavon put his penalty kick over the crossbar in the 87th minute, Then, 2 minutes later, he fired high on an open header. The top three teams qualify from the Concacaf group. The US is now 6-2-1, while Mexico is also through after a 4-1 win over El Salvador and Costa Rica is currently third after beating Trinidad and Tobago.
