(ChattahBox) — Texas Tech has fired football coach Mike Leach after suspending by the university on Monday while the school investigated allegations that he mistreated an injured player. Leach denied allegations he acted improperly in the treatment of injured wide receiver Adam James, and was set to appear before a Lubbock County district court on Wednesday seeking a temporary restraining order that would reinstate him in time to coach in Saturday’s game against Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl. The school handed a termination letter to Leach’s attorney, Ted Liggett, on Wednesday just before the two sides were to appear in a Lubbock, Texas, courtroom for a hearing on the coach’s suspension.
Liggett says the letter says Leach is “terminated with cause effective immediately.”
Receiver Adam James alleges Leach twice confined him to small, dark spaces during practice after the player was diagnosed with a concussion.
Leach compiled an 84-43 record and led the Red Raiders to a bowl game in each of his 10 seasons, and according to his contract, the fired coach will receive $1.6 million for the remaining four years of the agreement.
