Alleged Al Qaeda Plot To Attack World Cup Leads To Arrest

May 18, 2010

Iraq (ChattahBox) – A member of the Saudi Arabian chapter of al-Qaeda has been arrested for an alleged plot to attack the World Cup festivities in South Africa next month.

According to Iraq security spokesman Major General Qassim al-Moussawi, there had been a major plot to attack two holy sites in Iraq, and then the World Cup in South Africa. All three orders are supposed to have come from Osama bin Laden’s first aide, Ayman al-Zawahri.

However, there is some question as to the validity of the claims.

No evidence of an attack has been offered of the plot by Abdullah Azzam al-Qahtani, and al-Moussawi refused to comment when various media sources attempted to contact him.

Likewise, South African officials had heard nothing of the claims until it was released from Iraqi news agencies.

American intelligence agents also knew nothing about the allegations.
